A Stanthorpe man has walked free from court despite being involved in a brutal attack where another man was left with serious spinal injuries after being bashed with what police believe was a baseball bat.
Police prosecutor Steve de Lissa told the Stanthorpe Magistrates Court concerned Manning Street residents called triple-0 on June 4 after witnessing a violent group attack at about 4pm.
“There was a big punch-up involved in the street with some injuries sustained by the victim,” Sergeant de Lissa said.
Raymond Frederick Glenroy Darcy was one of six men involved in the melee.
Sergeant de Lissa said some of the men were armed.
“(Darcy) was seen by witnesses and wasn’t armed and didn’t strike the victim,” he said.
At the time of the incident Stanthorpe police Senior Constable Matt Shield said police believed a baseball bat was used, but the weapon was never recovered.
Magistrate Julian Noud said the father-of-two’s motivation in this particular attack remained a mystery.
“Your involvement and presence gave encouragement to the other co-offenders,” he said.
The 39-year-old professional woodchopper pleaded guilty to affray and was sentenced to four months’ jail, which was wholly suspended for 12 months.
