A 30-year-old Murgon man with “an appalling criminal history” has been sentenced to two years jail over a string of domestic violence offences against the mother of his child.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Murgon Magistrates Court on Tuesday, February 3, 2025, via video link as he was already in custody.

He pleaded guilty to eight counts of contravening a DVO, two counts of wilful damage, two counts of obstructing police and one count of assaulting a police officer.

The court heard his abuse started in 2014 when he was just 20 years old.

He had previously served time in prison for choking a woman, and was described by magistrate Andrew Sinclair as a repeat offender.

Police prosecutor Pepe Gangemi said the man assaulted the victim multiple times between September and December 2024.

He pushed her head into a wall, punched her in the throat, pulled her hair and hit her with a broom.

On one occasion, he hit the aggrieved on the back with a stick while she was holding their child. Another time he smashed photo frames and broke a window in her home.

Sergeant Gangemi told the court the man had previously been convicted of throwing a bottle of alcohol at the aggrieved and hitting her in the head and face multiple times, causing her to lose consciousness.

Mr Sinclair said the man’s behaviour showed little effort on his part to change his behaviour.

He was sentenced to two years in prison, with possible parole after serving a third of his sentence.

Mr Sinclair also imposed an order that he not be allowed to enter the South Burnett Regional Council Shire area while the domestic violence order was in place.
