A court has heard a mother who slashed her sister’s face with a glass bottle and tried to gouge out her eyes left the victim to get herself to hospital after the violent assault.

Twisted dad's ‘evil plan’ to kill his entire family

A Cherbourg mother has been sentenced to jail following an alcohol-fuelled attack on her sister, where she gashed the woman’s face with a glass bottle and tried to gouge out her eyes.

Sophia Francis Jacobs was walking down a Cherbourg street with her sister after a night of drinking in October last year when the two began arguing about a family conflict.

The argument escalated until the 33-year-old smashed the glass item she was holding into the other woman’s face, cutting a gash on her eyebrow and under her right eye.

Crown prosecutor Rebecca Marks told Maroochydore District Court that Jacobs continued to pull her sister’s hair and gouge at her eyes when the other woman fell to the ground.

“She grabbed the victim’s head and attempted to bash it on the ground,” Ms Marks said.

The court was told Jacobs left the victim following the assault, leaving the injured woman to get up and walk herself to hospital.

Ms Marks said the victim suffered several lacerations to her face as well as embarrassment, shame and fear as a result of the attack.

Jacobs appeared in court with a history of violence fuelled by alcohol, which had resulted in her being sentenced to jail several times previously.

Defence barrister Catherine Cuthbert said her client was exposed to serious violence as a child, including the death of an aunt as a result of domestic violence in 2004.

The court was told the subject of the women’s argument was deeply triggering for Jacobs and her alcohol consumption that night only fuelled the flames.

Jacobs pleaded guilty to one count of wounding.

Judge Glen Cash sentenced her to two years’ jail, warning her against drinking alcohol in the future.

“Some people can have a few beers and it’s okay, while other people just shouldn’t drink at all,” he said.

“And I regret that it might be you’re one of those people.”

Jacobs will be eligible for parole on June 27.
