Wondai house demolition to make way for nurses quarters

A Wondai property will transform into six residences after the state government’s million-dollar commitment to attract essential frontline workers to regional areas.

A property at 43 South Street in Wondai will be demolished this month as the Queensland Government looks to build more accommodation to attract essential frontline workers to regional Queensland.

The new residences will join the other seven already owned by the Department of Energy and Public Works in Wondai.

They will be available to all health and government professionals.

The housing will be made from modular building methods being trialled at QBuild’s new Rapid Accommodation and Apprenticeship Hub in Eagle Farm.

The project is expected to be put out to tender in March.

A spokesman from the Department of Energy and Public Works said workers included health professionals such as doctors, nurses and paramedics and teachers and police officers.

“This is part of the Queensland Government’s 2022-23 Budget commitment to invest $519.2 million into Government Employee Housing across the State,” the spokesman said.

Burnett resident Janette Elder said the staff at Wondai hospital deserved the housing.

“I think it's a great idea for the staff,” Ms Elder said.

A Wondai resident posted to social media, saying: “The current nurses’ quarters are disgusting and have already had asbestos removed and updated to a poor standard, it’s good to see that staff are finally being looked after.”
