Cherbourg’s fearless cowboys and cowgirls took to the rodeo ring on Friday night in honour of beloved elder Uncle Bevan Costello, who passed away last month.
The community rodeo was held on Cherbourg Day and hosted by Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council to bring the community together for a day of fun amid tough times.
Mayor Elvie Sandow said the event was designed to lift the community’s spirit and take their minds off the difficulties of the past months, even just for a day.
The event will from here out be a memorial to Uncle Bevan Costello, who CASC community services manager Aunty Edwina Stewart said was “always the first to put his hand up at community events” and the voice of the rodeo.
“From now on this is going to be a memorial to him,” Ms Stewart said.
“We’ve been through some really bad times this year and Bevan always made things fun and happy.
“I’d like to encourage the community to come along and help us when we have events - we need you, we can’t do it without you.”
