‘Think positive’: Breast cancer survivor shares story

"YOU have to be positive - other people will be positive if you are positive."

This is advice from breast cancer survivor Judy Garland.

The Proston resident was glad to have her family around her at the Proston District Golf Club's charity day, held to raise funds for breast cancer research on Saturday.

At the beginning of 2018, Mrs Garland was busy planning a cruise to Alaska with her husband Brian.

"I saw a little lump on the top of my boob and so I saw the doctor and did some tests," she said.

The tests came back positive for breast cancer.

"Everyone has been marvellous throughout my journey, especially up at the Toowoomba Hospital," Mrs Garland said.

"I had to have a mastectomy."

"You've got to think positive. I had my times where I'd be in a low, but you've got to haul yourself out."

She said women should check themselves regularly for any changes.

Mrs and Mr Garland plan to finally travel to Alaska in May next year.

Proston District Golf Club's Margaret Westerman said they raised $9400 from the fundraising event.

They cooked a barbecue lunch for participants and had about 100 people tuck in to a pig-on-a-spit dinner.

The dinner alone was a result of generous donations: Hivesville farmers Tracey and Peter Anderson donated the pig, butcher Josh Retschlag donated his expertise and Cindy Weaver offered up her spit for the day.

"All of the meal income, all of the fees and competition fees and auction and raffle money will go to breast cancer trials," Mrs Westerman said.

The fundraising started early thanks to $3000 in cash donations from six Proston landowners at the start of the day, while many others donated items for the auction.

One of the popular items on offer was a signed commemorative bat for the Queensland Bulls' first win after 90 years at the Sheffield Shield Cup.
