A family owned company with locations across Australia, including the South Burnett, is poised to build its own fertiliser manufacturing facility in Kingaroy after receiving preliminary approval in 2023.

E. E. Muir and Sons have submitted a development application to the South Burnett Regional Council, which includes a permit and a material change for use for the manufacturing of fertiliser - receiving preliminary approval on September 12, 2023.

The application outlines where the new structures will be built on the already existing property of E. E. Muir and Sons in Kingaroy at 107 River Rd.

Some of existing buildings will also be used for the new operation, with the plans including an agricultural supplies store, a storage facility for agricultural supply stock and the manufacturing of fertilisers involving the use of ammonia.

One of the conditions for the application to be approved is that noxious or offensive odours not be emitted beyond the boundaries of the premises.

They are allowed to produce up to 1200 tonnes of fertiliser per year, according to the conditions.

A risk analysis taken out by Range Environmental Consultants concluded in their report the proposed facility posed a low risk to the environment.

The privately owned company, wholly owned by the Muir family, provides goods and services in hydroponics, seeds, crops, forestry, animal production and wine making.

The company currently stocks and sells fertiliser from existing companies, namely Campbells Fertilisers Australia and Valagro.

Edward Eric Muir established the business in 1927, at the Victoria Market in Melbourne.

After Mr Muir’s retirement, his son Max continued to develop and expand the business and was joined by his two sons, Ric and Ian in 1969 and 1975.

It is unknown when the new operation will start.
