The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A Roma man and woman charged with manslaughter following the death of six-year-old Riley Wells have had their respective cases mentioned in court.

Jessie Jade Dennis, 34, and Summer-Ann Michelle Harrison, 19, were charged in January 2023 in connection with the death of Riley Wells after the car he was in was hit by a prime mover on Carnarvon Highway 20km north of Injune.

Police allege that Mr Dennis was driving a white Toyota LandCruiser, with Ms Harrison and Riley passengers in the vehicle, when about 2.10am on January 6, 2022, the vehicle left the road and rolled before coming to rest in the northbound lane.

Following the crash it is alleged the two adults were able to free themselves, however the boy was not removed from the vehicle and was still in the LandCruiser when it was struck by a passing prime mover. Riley died at the scene.

Police prosecutor Mathew Donnelly revealed police had finished compiling “telephone interceptions” as part of the brief of evidence against the two defendants.

“I can advise that material was provided this morning so it is yet to be disclosed,” Mr Donnelly said.

Lawyer Trevor May, who appeared on behalf of Mr Dennis, asked the court for an adjournment to give time for the defence to look over the provided telephone transcripts.

“We need some time to proceed over the material and take instructions and seek an adjournment,” Mr May said.

Magistrate Shane Elliott granted both Mr Dennis and Ms Harrison a two month adjournment.

Mr Dennis and Ms Harrison remain on bail while in the community and will have their matters heard again in Roma Magistrates Court on November 15, 2023 at 9am.
