Australia's growing drug crisis

Two Roma women have landed in court for a string of charges relating to their behaviour during a police raid on their South St home.

Layla Lee Joyce Fraser and Jenny Lee Ebsworth both appeared and pleaded guilty to their respective charges separately in Roma Magistrates Court.

Fraser was charged with public nuisance, obstructing police and possessing a drug utensil while Ebsworth was charged with public nuisance and possessing a drug utensil.

Police prosecutor Mathew Donnelly said on July 28 officers executed a search warrant at a South St, Roma address.

Officers located both women in one of the bedrooms and explained to them the provisions of the search warrant.

The court was told Ebsworth, the owner-occupier, admitted to smoking cannabis and that there was a water pipe in the bedroom.

However, Fraser was “immediately hostile” and “scrunched up the search warrant” before screaming at police.

As Fraser was arrested by police she continued to scream and swear at them.

“Police searched the residence and located a used bong in the bedroom,” Mr Donnelly said.

“(Fraser) told them to f–k off and called them c–ksuckers, pedophiles, c–ts and fat pigs.”

Once police walked Fraser outside, Ebsworth began yelling similar phrases and words in an officer’s face.

Acting magistrate Gary Finger said their behaviour was “rubbish” and threatened the women with jail time if they keep coming back to court.

“If you keep doing this sort of rubbish and you end up back here, next time it’s not going to be a fine. You’ll go back to prison,” he said.

Fraser was fined $800 referred to SPER and Ebsworth was fined $500 referred to SPER. Both were given a forfeiture order for the drug utensil.

Convictions were recorded for both defendants.
