“Get ready for Lowood”: first-timers eager for Vowles Cup

“Rough and tumble country kids” of the Lowood Stags are eagerly anticipating their debut in the Adrian Vowles Cup.

Lowood Junior Rugby League are coming to the Adrian Vowles Cup for the first time.

FIRST time Adrian Vowles Cup entrants, the Lowood Stags, have well and truly caught the travel bug.

Over the past few years, the dedicated group of boys have travelled to the Gorden Tallis Cup in Townsville, and the Jason Hetherington Cup in Gladstone, and can now the intrepid group can add Charleville to their growing list of destinations.

Team manager Angie Lester told the Western Times the boys from outside Ipswich are a group of rough-and-tumble country kids, who can’t wait to make the most of their visit to Charleville.

“We are bringing out a combined team of 13s and 14s to Charleville; we’re a country club and, you know, we do scrape teams together pretty much every season,” she said

“But that combined team is giving the boys a chance to work together and play together, and everyone is really excited about coming out.”

The young Stags aren’t just excited for the football either.

They have been eagerly studying the local fishing conditions, hopeful to have some fun with their fellow competitors outside of the games.

“They are real country kids who love each other’s company, and as well as playing footy, they are so excited for a chance to go fishing,” Lester said.

“Together they make up a really special club, and a really good team which they have going.”

The group headed for the Cup has been playing together for a number of years, rising through the age groups; their cohesion is the driving force behind their big trips for footy.

“On top of the face they are a team, the boys have a strong friendship bond – it doesn’t matter what they are doing, they are doing it together,” Lester said.

“That is what motivates us to go the distance with this team, so Charleville, get ready for Lowood!”
