A 16-year old boy has been charged after a woman was allegedly assaulted during an attempted robbery when she went to check her power box in the middle of the night.
The power at the 73-year-old woman’s Main Street home in Park Avenue suddenly went out on January 25 at 11pm.
She went outside to check the switchboard, where she turned the power back on thinking an appliance had tripped it out.
When back inside the power went off again, causing the woman to go back outside where she was allegedly struck from behind with an unknown implement.
A male yelled at the woman while another male did a quick search of the house before they left empty-handed.
A set of car keys were also taken but the vehicle they belonged to was unable to be driven because of mechanical issues.
Police allege the power was turned off by the two offenders.
The woman was taken to Rockhampton Hospital where she was treated for a laceration to the back of her head and bruising on her arms.
Capricornia District Detective Acting Inspector Luke Peachey said police over the weekend took into custody a 16-year-old male and charged him with armed robbery with intent and attempted stealing.
“It was a disgusting crime where they lured an elderly female person downstairs by turning her power off to her power box and then assaulted her and attempted to steal her car,” Detective Acting Inspector Peachey said.
“We are very pleased to have taken this person into custody.
“There is still one person outstanding and investigations will continue in regards to the location of that person.”
It was originally reported that both the offenders were described as juveniles.
He said police had been looking at the 16-year-old male for a long time but that he had left Rockhampton.
“With some communication with detectives down in Moreton we were able to pick this person up and bring him before the courts,” he said.
Detective Acting Inspector Peachey said the alleged victim was very pleased with the outcome.
“She is a tough old bugger but at the end of the day she is glad someone now has to answer for the crimes that have been committed against her,” he said.
He said the 16-year-old boy would appear in the Brisbane Childrens Court.
