A teenage thief stole a handbag that was sitting on a table at a Capricorn Coast bar seven days after he had been handed a suspended prison sentence in court.
Josiah Stanley Baira, 19, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court to one count of stealing and possessing dangerous drugs.
Police prosecutor Tiffany Moras said Baira attended the Railway Hotel in Yeppoon on September 14 and about 10pm stole an unattended handbag and left the venue with it.
Ms Moras said the handbag was worth about $150 and contained money, bank cards and keys.
She said $150 restitution was sought from the owner.
She said Baira was arrested on Power Street, Yeppoon, on September 16 at 12.54pm and searched, with police finding less than 1g of marijuana and a joint in his pocket.
The court heard Baira was placed on a suspended sentence seven days before the stealing offence for an attempted enter dwelling with intent and enter premises and commit indictable offence.
He was sentenced in court on September 7 to nine months prison, suspended for 18 months.
Defence lawyer Ashley Reynolds said the stealing was opportunistic.
Ms Reynolds said her client planned to join a boxing gym, live with his mum and obtain work.
Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale sentenced Baira to one-month prison with immediate parole eligibility.
Ms Beckinsale activated the suspended sentence and ordered to pay $150 restitution.
Criminal convictions were recorded.
