Lights illuminated a tree of a different kind when police searched a Park Avenue man’s home the day after Christmas.
Jack James Osborn, 27, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Wednesday, January 10, to producing a dangerous drug, possessing a dangerous drug and possessing a used utensil.
The court heard police went to Osborn’s home on the morning of Boxing Day for another matter.
During their investigation they searched the home and in one of the rooms they could smell a strong marijuana scent.
In the room they saw a large black pot containing a small plant in soil and a set of ultraviolet lights which displayed a “purple glow” on the plant in a hydroponic set up.
The court heard the plant had characteristics consistent with marijuana, and weighed about 2.15 grams.
In a further search of the house police went into another room which smelt “strongly” of marijuana and also found a bottle that had been turned into a bong.
Police prosecutor Courtney Brown told the court the bong looked like it had been used.
Ms Brown told the court Osborn made admissions to officers that the items belonged to him and told them he purchased marijuana seeds online to save money.
Osborn’s lawyer Samantha Legrady told the court her client had been unable to work for the past two years due to an injury.
Ms Legrady told the court Osborn had been using the marijuana for pain relief, but had since been able to obtain medical cannabis.
Osborn was fined $800 and a conviction was not recorded.
