Convicted sexual offender Alexander John Doig created online profiles

A convicted sexual offender created seven online profiles with messaging platforms after he was convicted for distributing child exploitation material.

A convicted sexual offender created seven online profiles that had messaging platforms - twice - after he was convicted for distributing child exploitation material and possessing hundreds of videos and images.

Alexander John Doig, 49, was convicted in Rockhampton District Court in February 2020 of possessing, accessing and distributing child exploitation material.

He has breached the sentence twice – once in 2021 for failing to comply with reporting obligations and in 2023 when he failed to report seven online accounts with messaging services.

In July, 2018, police executed a search warrant at Doig’s residence and they found a laptop which contained 272 child porn images and 309 videos.

After he was arrested, Doig made admissions to receiving, downloading and exchanging pictures and movies via Facebook messenger and the Kik application.

In 2020, Doig was sentenced to 18 months’ jail, wholly suspended for three years.

Doig’s 2021 breaches involved creating an active Reddit account and a social media account, which he used to create a page with the description ‘love girls buttholes, anything naughty and dirty, love to chat and trade’.

His district court sentence operational period was extended by 12 months after the October 2021 breaches.

Crown prosecutor Ken Spinaze this week told the district court one of the online profiles discovered was for a pornographic site, a dating site, the gaming site Steam and the career site LinkedIn.

He said Doig also created a Facebook account, but later deleted it, and had a YouTube account and had used Google’s Hangouts messaging service.

Doig pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on September 18, 2023, to seven counts of failing to report the online accounts to authorities, as required under the Queensland Child Protection Act.

The offences occurred on March 29, 2020, March 31, 2020, 23 August 2022, four in November 2022.

He was placed on an 18-month probation and ordered to the district court for breaching the suspended sentence.

Defence barrister Maree Willey said her client lives on a farm as a caretaker, as the owner has ill health.

She said he is likely to lose his accommodation due to being sent to prison for these breaches.

This week, he was sent to prison to serve at least six months of the 18-month prison term after Judge Jeff Clarke found him in breach of the sentence.
