A Queensland judge has told a recidivist offender with a 19-page criminal history that he doesn’t hold much hope for his rehabilitation, while sentencing him for stealing more than $2000 worth of clothes from sports stores in Central Queensland.

Christopher Travis Lee Tremaine, 37, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton District Court on November 3 to two counts of stealing.

Crown prosecutor Caleb Theunissen said Tremaine and another person attended Intersport in Rockhampton on July 24, 2022 and stole $1039 worth of clothing.

Mr Theunissen said Tremaine and two others attended SportsPower in Gladstone on August 4, 2022 and were seen pulling items off the racks and stole $1104 worth of clothing.

He said on August 10, 2022, police attended Tremaine’s home in Wandal where he told officers he stole from the two sports stores and was charged and remanded in custody.

The court heard Tremaine was wearing some of the stolen clothing when he was confronted by police.

Mr Theunissen said Tremaine had spent 330 days in custody.

Judge William Everson said Tremaine was sentenced to 12 months prison for other offences in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on July 31, 2023.

“Had these offences been dealt with at the same time it is unlikely you would have received additional imprisonment,” he said.

Judge Everson said Tremaine was a recidivist offender and appeared to be someone who suffers from a drug addiction.

“It appears most of your offending is connected to your use of illicit substances,” he said.

“I don’t hold much hope for your rehabilitation but I suppose it is never too late.”

Judge Everson convicted but did not further punish Tremaine.

Criminal convictions were recorded.

Judge Everson released Tremaine from jail immediately on parole until August 30, 2024.
