Motorists faced delays after a car burst into flames on the Bruce Highway north of Rockhampton.

The road was closed in both directions from about 5pm on Sunday but was reported cleared about 10pm on Sunday night.

First responders arrived to the scene after reports of a car fully engulfed in fire and possible explosions near The Caves south of Yaamba.

Black smoke poured from the vehicle in the northbound lane, stopping traffic in both directions with motorists pulling to the side of the road.

Reports indicate there were about three people in the car when the fire first started but they were out by the time it became fully engulfed.

The incident is believed to be between Milman Dr and Flood Rd.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said the fire had sparked a grass fire, necessitating the road closure.

She said everyone in the car had been accounted for.

She said initial reports of a trailer attached to the car being on fire had not yet been confirmed.
