A drug user with a seven-page criminal record has been caught with methamphetamine and stealing a $849 bicycle from a worker in Rockhampton’s CBD.

Baden John Plummer, 32, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on June 21 to two counts of failing to appear in accordance with an undertaking and possessing S4 or S8 medicines or hazardous poisons, and one count each of possessing dangerous drugs and stealing.

Police prosecutor Courtney Brown said investigators were conducting inquiries at Central Park Motel in Allenstown in relation to other matters when they spoke to Plummer in the reception area and detained him for a search.

Ms Brown said investigators searched Plummer and found a clip seal bag containing 0.5g of meth and 12 Lyrica tablets.

She said Plummer claimed he had a prescription for Lyrica but couldn’t explain why the tablets were in a clip seal bag and not packaged correctly and that he failed to produce a script to police.

She said Plummer stole a bicycle that was parked outside an address and not locked on Quay Street, Rockhampton, on April 4.

The victim had purchased the bicycle from Giant Rockhampton for $849.99 and had parked it up while they worked.

Ms Brown said Plummer was captured on CCTV watching the bicycle for about three minutes before taking off on it down Quay Lane.

She said $849.99 restitution was sought.

She said Plummer was again searched by police at Motel 98 in Rockhampton and that officers found a clip seal bag with pregabalin (Lyrica) tablets on his person and another clip seal bag nearby. A total of 14 tablets were found.

Ms Brown said Plummer told police he had a prescription but failed to produce it.

Plummer also failed to appear in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on April 11 and June 9.

The court heard some of the offending was committed while Plummer was on parole.

Ms Brown said Plummer’s seven-page criminal record was the “sought of history you would see with a habitual drug user”.

Defence lawyer Claire Brtevnik said her client struggled with drugs and was doing sessions through alcohol and other drugs services.

“He tells me he has been clean for a while,” she said.

Ms Brtevnik said her client was released from custody around November 2022 and that this was the longest period he had been out of custody in about eight years.

Magistrate Cameron Press handed Plummer a head prison sentence of six months’, wholly suspended for 12 months.

Plummer was also fined $400 and ordered to pay $849.99 restitution.

The Lyrica tablets were forfeited to police.
