More drive-thrus are proposed for Rockhampton’s busy highway strip on George Street, with the latest plans taking the tally up to six established drive-thrus and four more planned to be built.
An application to build two food and drink drive-thru tenancies across house blocks on the corner of George and Campbell Street was submitted to Rockhampton Regional Council last week.
The site, 65A George Street and 28-34 Cambridge Street, is across five lots which would be split into two.
The properties are under contract through Kas Woch Real Estate and have not yet settled formally.
A sale price could not be confirmed at this time.
The multi-sale was previously advertised in 2020, with one extra property, for $1.519 million.
The development application has been submitted on behalf of ATG Projects, a construction, fit-out and refurbishment company with offices in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
Their project portfolio includes various fit-outs across schools, childcare, offices, shopping centre food court, gym and more.
The submitted renders for the development include signage for Portuguese-style fast food franchise Oporto.
Oporto came to Australia in 1986 and is owned by the holding company that also owns Red Rooster.
There are 22 stores in Queensland and the menu offers flame grilled chicken, meal boxes, wraps, snacks and sides.
A second drive-thru is also included in the proposed renders however it is noted in the application that a tenant for tenancy two has not been finalised.
Advertisements have been published online for Oporto and Gloria Jeans franchises.
It is understood Gloria Jeans was planned to be built alongside the Oporto at the George and Cambridge Streets site however it is unclear if this is still going ahead.
The Oporto franchise is still listed for sale for $545,000.
Access to the Oporto and second tenancy site is proposed to be off a new crossover on Cambridge Street, in line with standard practice so the access is not off a busy highway.
The plans include space for 15 parking spaces.
The first food and drink tenancy, Oporto, would be 4.83 metres high and 183 sqm in gross floor area.
It would be built in stage one, along with the car park, access, driveway, fence and refuse area.
The second tenancy is proposed to be 4.16 metres high and 150 sqm in gross floor area, to be built.
Both tenancies will have drive-thrus.
The application also looks to reconfigure the five house lots in two lots.
There are six drive-thrus across George Street on the Bruce Highway strip, including Hungry Jacks, McDonalds, Red Rooster, Carl’s Jr, Cocobrew Express and KFC.
There are also a handful of takeaway shops in various complexes on the street from Fischo, Sunshine Kebabs, Noodle Paradise, Noot’s Thai Food, Subway, Gus’ Coffee, Pizza Hut and Baskin and Robbins.
Construction is well underway for the Guzman y Gomez drive-thru on the corner of George and Fitzroy Street, the former Project Mex site.
Hutchinson Builders have been doing the works and the main frame for the building went up in recent weeks.
A second drive-thru has been approved for the site, for Banjo’s Bakery, which construction has not appeared to have started for yet.
The former Smoooth Juice site, across from the proposed Oporto site, remains empty as the building was cleared in June after it was destroyed by fire in March.
The fire was deemed suspicious by police and remains under investigation.
The company filed for liquidation two weeks after the fire, owing $800,000.
The cafe manager, Brett David Paul, has been wanted on a warrant since June for charges unrelated to the cafe collapse.
