Two men are “thawing out” after they were forced to flee from their houseboat after it sank off the coast of Rainbow Beach, north of Noosa.
Noosa Coast Guard Commander Ian Hutchings said two men driving a houseboat from Maryborough to Brisbane were forced to abandon ship about 2pm on Friday, July 1, 2022.
Commander Hutchings said they jumped off of the boat onto a small inflatable dinghy and radioed in for help half a mile off Rainbow Beach.
The Sunshine Coast-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter located both men in their dinghy, surrounded by wreckage.
Once the crew located the partially sunken boat about 300m off the coastline they were able to communicate with them and confirm they were uninjured.
The chopper hovered overhead with the crew keeping a close eye on the boaties while a Noosa Coast Guard vessel travelled out and took them to safety.
Commander Hutchings said the men were pleased to see the Coast Guard arrive after their intrepid journey.
“They are thawing and drying out as we speak,” he said.
