Two women have been charged after a man was allegedly doused in petrol and set alight outside a popular Toowoomba family pub.
Police will allege a 35-year-old Wilsonton woman and a 31-year-old Newtown woman were with the man when he was deliberately set alight about 9.50pm on Wednesday.
Both women have been charged with one count each of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm and will appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Friday.
The alleged victim was on Thursday identified as loving father of four Jordan Moore, 26, as his parents, speaking with 7 News, relived the moment police knocked on their door in the early hours of Thursday morning, informing them of the incident.
“We got a knock on the door early this morning, and we got a bit shocked,” Mr Moore’s mother Sharlene Krause said.
“I just got told he got doused and lit, and that’s just wrong,” Mr Moore’s father Barry Moore said.
“It’s not a good wake-up call.”
Police allege Mr Moore was attacked in the carpark of the Stock Hotel on Anzac Ave in Harristown and was taken to Toowoomba Hospital with the “non-life-threatening” injuries before being flown to Brisbane, where he has been intubated.
He remains there in a serious condition.
His parents said their son suffered burns to his face, neck and arms that are so severe he is unable to speak.
Police have described the alleged incident as “very unusual” and are reviewing CCTV footage from the pub, with Darling Downs Detective Acting Inspector Paula Smithard urging residents with information or dashcam footage from the time period to contact them.
“I haven’t come across something like this within my policing career,” she said.
“It is concerning but I just want to reassure the public that we do not believe this is a random attack.
“We’re appealing to anyone who has seen that male person to come forward and call police.”
Acting Inspector Smithard was also quick to dismiss initial reports circulating on social media that the man was a rideshare driver or that his car had been stolen.
“At this stage, I can confirm that he is not an Uber driver or rideshare driver,” she said.
“With social media, it doesn’t help when we are investigating matters like this.
“QPS are about investigating and obtaining evidence, to progress an investigation.”
Early reports suggested the man told responding officers the car had been stolen after he was doused in fuel, but Acting Inspector Smithard said the vehicle was in the carpark of the pub.
“Only a brief version of events could be obtained from the victim due to his injuries, and I’m unsure where that information has come from,” she said.
“That vehicle is not stolen, the vehicle he arrived in was the victim’s vehicle.
“That car was there when officers arrived.”
Anyone with information or footage should call PoliceLink on 131 444 or call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
