Fourteen new townhouses are going on a large city centre block that has been vacant for at least 16 years. Find out what they’ll cost to buy and see the designs.

A Mackay builder will construct 14 new units on a large city centre block that has been vacant for at least 16 years.

The one-bedroom units are slated for 65 Shakespeare St in East Mackay, directly opposite Victoria Park State School and only a kilometre from both the CBD and Town Beach.

LJ Hooker Mackay brokered the recent sale of the 2023 sqm lot which had been owned by persons in Slade Point since 1988.

Clinton Smith and his crew at CJ Smith Homes received approval earlier this month from Mackay Regional Council to build 14 two-storey units on the long, 20m wide block which will be about 115 sqm each.

Design plans show two separate buildings with units one to three towards the front of the block and units four through to 14 at the rear with guest parking in-between.

The ground floor of each unit has a 4x4m open space and patio leading into a single-car garage and laundry.

On the first floor is a main bedroom with a walk-in-wardrobe; a bathroom; and an open-planned kitchen, dining and living space with a built-in study nook and double glass doors opening to a 2x4m balcony.

While the units are fully air conditioned, the units and front balconies have an easterly aspect which take advantage of sea breezes from nearby Town Beach.

The one-bedroom townhouses will be marketed at $379,000 each and will be eligible for buyers to apply the state government’s first home owner’s grant.

Surrounding the townhouses to the east and west are predominantly multiple dwelling developments with low to medium density comprising the majority of blocks to the south.

On the opposite end of Shakespeare St at number 419, Conor Smith has applied to council to subdivide his corner 814 sqm block into four lots to support an already-approved application for four two-storey dwellings at the site.

Each dwelling has three bedrooms, a single-car garage and two balconies.

Conor Smith bought the land opposite the Mackay Women’s Centre in November 2019 for $195,000.
