AN ICONIC Mackay CBD building is poised for a makeover after a successful marketing campaign led to it changing hands last week.

The 1920s era building at 162 Wood Street was sold for an undisclosed price on June 13, after just eight weeks on the market.

While selling agent Serge Doumergue of Professionals Mackay could not disclose who the buyers were, he said they planned to renovate the building and open a business.

The site, which has been vacant for at least two years, has been home to many businesses and was most recently the Mackay headquarters of mining supply business Cobra South Pacific.

The building was originally home to a well-known dental surgery for many years.

On February 16, 1927, the Daily Mercury reported that "The new premises, situated in Wood Street, which have been built by Mr E.L. Guinn as a dentistry, are designed on the latest models...".

It described the building as being "built entirely of concrete", adding that "the front portion is most attractive and is built with a number of round concrete pillars, on which the roof rests".

The interior walls were finished in three-ply Oregon pine, varnished a dark brown. The building was designed and built by Messrs D.E. McDonald & Son.

The dentistry eventually moved from the property and it later became home to a quilting and patchwork supplies business.
