A Mackay electrical wholesaler will move from the riverside to the south side of town in an expansion hoped to spark new jobs.
Haymans Electrical, currently on River St, will open with a new build at 167 Paradise St before 2026 if all goes to plan.
Haymans Mackay profit centre manager Michael Kerr said the move was necessary to accommodate growth, having gone from four full-time employees to 13 over the past decade, reaching “full capacity”.
“Basically, this business here (in River St) will fit inside the (new) warehouse,” Mr Kerr said.
“Getting out of here is an opportunity for developers to move in and that’s what Mackay needs.”
Haymans is hoping the expansion will end its reliance on using an offsite storage facility to store extra stock.
The single structure on the paved lot at Paradise St will be demolished to make way for the new 1585 sqm fit-out complete with a 1115 sqm warehouse, outdoor storage area and 31 car parks.
Mr Kerr said more warehouse and trade area space would let them “experiment with different products” and stock a greater variety and quantity of goods to meet customers’ needs.
“I’m hoping, if all goes to plan, I’d like to be moving in at this time next year,” he said.
“That all depends on supply chain issues and the weather.”
Haymans is aiming to break ground on the site in early 2025 with construction expected to take about eight months.
“We can start 2026 in a whole new building,” Mr Kerr said.
“It’s going to be good for us.”
Given the proximity of Paradise St to the CBD, Mr Kerr said he wanted to assure customers “we’re still in town”.
“In my eyes we’re still in Mackay,” he said adding that if their growth rate persisted, they’d look at hiring delivery, sales and warehouse staff.
“We are looking at substantial growth,” he said.
