Doctors snap up Long Island for a sweet $2m

THERE are two Long Islands off the Mackay region’s coastline.

UPDATE:

THERE are two Long Islands off the Mackay region's coastline.

The one in a Daily Mercury story published after it sold for $2 million to two Sydney-based doctors is located south of Mackay toward Rockhampton.

It was referred to in sales brochures as being at the southern end of the Whitsunday region.

However, the photo used in the story was incorrect and was of the resort on Long Island off Airlie Beach that is also for sale.

EARLIER:

TWO cardiologists who lost their hearts big-time to the beauty of Long Island off the coast of Mackay have snapped it up for a bargain price.

Every man's an island but in this case some men get to buy one too.

The residents of Sydney's eastern suburbs knew the beautiful island with its sandy beaches represented true value and paid $2 million to seal the deal.

The price would hardly have scored a decent lawn in their expensive Sydney neighbourhood - here they got plenty.

Offshore between Mackay and Rockhampton at the southern end of the Whitsundays, the island with plenty of fresh water and sheltered coves and fishing sites had a lot to offer but had been on the market for 18 months at about $3.5 million.

This year the slice of paradise became more negotiable.

The sale was handled by Richard Vanhoff, of Coldwell Banker. He confirmed it had finalised after a marketing campaign, calling for expressions of interest, ended on June 30.

Mr Vanhoff confirmed two Sydney families purchased the island as a private investment.

"They are very, very happy about it," he said.

"It will be a lifestyle purchase for them and they will develop it for their own use.

"They are families with children."

Mr Vanhoff said he had continued to receive inquiries about Long Island but had to reply that the contracts were settled.

The island has its own airstrip that Mr Vanhoff says can take a twin-engine light aircraft.

At 1600m another strip can be improved and is long enough take a small Citation jet for an easy commute south.

The island has an interesting history and comes with an established working farm with bores, fencing and good soil.

There is the possibility of further agricultural development if the owners want to take on new challenges.
