Inside plans for Kilkivan Bush Camping’s new live event theatre

A popular Gympie region campground has unveiled plans to open a new event venue on its site in a move which it says will help save another regional music festival now left without a home.

Kilkivan Bush Camping said its proposed entertainment theatre would help by allowing the campground to host new events including the GAS (Goats Acoustic Sessions), a three-day music and camping weekend hosted by the Hillbilly Goats which is looking for a new festival site after its Brooweena venue was sold.

Kilkivan Bush Camping is eyeing a new expansion at their popular regional campground with plans unveiled to open an event theatre on its site near the regional town.

The award-winning company’s plans, if approved Gympie Regional Council, would allow them to construct the outdoor entertainment centre at their Rossmore Rd property about 6km southeast of the town and 48km west of Gympie.

The “theatre” would play host to movies, live music, live entertainment, and film and movie production.

The developer said events may include food and alcohol consumption.

It proposed holding up to 10 events each year, with the number of guests capped at 500 including staff and volunteers.

A new pedestrian bridge will be built across Sawpit East Branch Creek, which divides the campground, to mitigate road traffic.

Plans for the theatre are not yet available, with the company’s application saying they were unlikely to be finished until July owing to a lengthy waiting list with their chosen draftsman.

The venue would be built at the southern end next to the camp’s Bush Bar.

The developer said the venue would help with a post-Covid shift “toward boutique-style events” which “has increased demand for smaller, high quality, immersive experiences.

“The Theatre aligns with this trend, ensuring a relaxed, family-friendly entertainment offering,” the developer said.

It would also help by allowing the campground to host new events including the GAS (Goats Acoustic Sessions), a three-day music and camping weekend hosted by the Hillbilly Goats which is looking for a new festival site after its Brooweena venue was sold.

The theatre would be only open for “exclusive use” of overnight guests at the camp.

Guests who leave the park mid-event would incur a $200 fine to “ensure controlled movement” during events, the application said.
