THIS young couple had never even considered buying at auction until some sage advice from their broker.

And in the end, they came out on top, fending off competition for 29 Cinnamon Drive, Glenella.

After a strong opening bid of $400,000, the price quickly rose to $425,000. A halt was called while Explore Property agents liased with a Westpac representative present for the mortgagee sale.

In the end the hammer fell to 30-year-old boilermaker, Kerry Warren.

He said he was keen to get into the modern four-bedroom home with two bathrooms and a big garage after selling up his first home. He said he and his partner Katie had been looking for eight months.

"Long story short we had a contract on a house subject to selling our house so by the time we asked for one more extension on the house we were buying our house went unconditional so we had to sell," he said.

"Then we were left without our house," he laughed.

"It was only until I'd talked to my broker, we'd never really looked at any ads that said auction.

The location was part of the appeal, looking to give his two little girls their own space.

"Glenella, Rural View, we come from Beaconsfield and we were just looking for something with a bit of potential," Mr Warren said.

"I actually think there's a little bit that needs doing, the ceilings aren't really crash hot, water's leaking "I've got two kids and I just wanted to give them their own space.”

Explore Property agent Mandy Atherton said Glenella is a great area and the price was bang on the money.

"We had three registered bidders,” she said.

"There were about 30-40 people there and we're very very happy with the result, over the moon.

"Glenella's always commanded more, it's always been a popular area and I don't think it's ever going to change.

"This is a fantastic neighbourhood, I've got to even know the neighbours during the four week campaign.”

According to the latest CoreLogic data, the median house price sale for Glenella is $446,250, having seen 3.8 per cent growth in the past three months, and 1.4 per cent over the past year.

This is more than $100,000 more than the median sales price for all the greater Mackay area at $340,000.
