A Mackay leading hand who drunkenly gave Brisbane hotel staff a live sex show and “twiddled” his penis at random passers-by has been told the last thing the public needed to see “is you parading yourself naked”.

A Fortitude Valley hotel was forced to have its public spa sterilised after Dean John Dodic and his then partner had intercourse in the communal space during a boozy trip to Brisbane.

Dodic then thrust and fondled his penis while standing at a window overlooking the busy city centre street.

Details of the exhibitionist display were read out in Mackay Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded guilty to indecent act in any place to which the public are permitted access and indecent act in any place – namely “twiddling” his penis with intent to insult or offend any person.

The couple jumped in the communal spa at the Brunswick Central Hotel about 6.40pm on June 14, 2024 where they “engaged in sexual intercourse” before he jumped out, stripped naked and paraded around the spa area, all while being observed by the hotel staff.

The court heard the 29-year-old then went to the large windows in the spa area, yelled out to passing pedestrians below on Brunswick St and started to “wag, thrust and fondle his genitals towards passing members of the public”.

His partner left the area, but he climbed onto a ledge and “continues to fiddle with his genitals towards passing members of the public”.

His actions were captured on “high quality and close proximity CCTV cameras” also fitted with an audio recording feature.

“This captures the defendant cackling and yahooing during his actions,” the police prosecutor said.

The court heard the hotel had to pay $700 to sterilise the spa before allowing other guests to use it.

“I think the last thing the public need to see is you parading yourself naked,” Acting Magistrate Stephen Byrne said.

Legal Aid Queensland solicitor Ancilla Seethya said Dodic had only learned three weeks ago he would be charged so his guilty plea was early.

She said he was employed full time as a leading hand with the intention to move into mining management.

“He holds various machinery tickets, and he is looking to complete the full mining induction in the coming months,” Ms Seethya said, adding his criminal history was limited and with nothing of a like nature.

“This could be considered out of character for Mr Dodic.”

She said the woman had been his partner and he had travelled to Brisbane for an event.

“He was consuming a lot of alcohol at the time, and he is remorseful for his disgraceful behaviour,” Ms Seethya said.

She pushed for a fine with no conviction recorded as it would have a negative impact on his work ambitions.

Dodic was fined $1000 and a conviction was not recorded.

Mr Byrne said this was Dodic’s third time in court and he had avoided a conviction so far.

“I think it’s fair to say that if you come back again on anything else, you’re going to be looking at the recording of a conviction,” he said.
