A convicted hoon with a 20-page criminal history, who dangerously reversed out of a Glenella servo to flee police, forcing other drivers to swerve to avoid a crash, claims he “wishes to change”.
Despite Jordan Tyrone Alberts’ “appalling” criminal history, his lawyer argued “he may not yet be a lost cause” after the 30-year-old pleaded guilty to 10 offences committed on November 23, 2024 and April 19, 2025.
Mackay Magistrates Court heard this included using a knife to try and enter his former partner’s home at 5am while she was sleeping, to he claimed, pick up clothes even though there were strict conditions prohibiting him from going within 100m of her home.
At the time Alberts was also on a suspended jail term for other unrelated offending.
The dangerous driving in April occurred at 2.30pm when Alberts and another person were at Glenella Fuels when police parked in front of their vehicle with lights and sirens on.
So, he reversed at speed onto a busy Hill End Rd and drove backwards forcing others to take evasive action to avoid a crash.
The court heard this conduct occurred over about 80m before Alberts made a U turn and left police view.
At the time his licence had been disqualified since March 28, 2024.
“He not only puts himself in danger, he puts other drivers in danger, he puts the community in danger,” Sergeant Linden Pollard said, adding Alberts previously received jail terms for some of his disqualified driving entries.
“He’s got an appalling traffic history,” Magistrate Anna Smith said.
The court also heard Alberts had multiple entries on his criminal history for dangerous, disqualified and unlicensed driving and evade police.
On Friday he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving with a previous conviction, two further counts of disqualified driving, evasion, enter premises and commit indictable offence and breaching a domestic violence order.
Ms Smith said Alberts was “not adverse to breaking and entering” commenting he had entries for that on his history as well.
“And she (the girlfriend) is asleep at the time”.
ATILS defence solicitor Daniel Lane said his client grew up in Mackay and had completed until year 10 at Pioneer State High School, adding Alberts had a good work history since as a roof tiler and meatworker.
Mr Lane said Alberts had “some irons in the fire” for work in earthmoving on his release and his client instructed he had been trying to get his clothes from his partner’s home when that offending occurred.
“I don’t accept that you went there to get your clothes at all … when you were using a knife to get through a door,” Ms Smith told Alberts.
“It’s in blatant contravention of the order.”
Mr Lane said his client had been engaging with Lives Lived Well and planned to go to rehab and even though he had a 20-page criminal history he “wishes to change”.
Ms Smith said rehab would assist but Alberts just had to “not do it (commit crimes)”.
“You just don’t drive, it’s as simple as that,” she said, also warning he needed to comply with the domestic violence order.
The court heard the relationship was not over.
Alberts was jailed for 18 months with parole release after six months and his licence was banned for three years for both counts of disqualified driving, and 41 days in presentence custody was declared as time already served.
Convictions were recorded.
