Bruce Highway crash: Man suffers serious head injuries at Chelona

A man who suffered horror injuries after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a tree south of Mackay has been identified.

A man who suffered horror injuries after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a tree at Chelona has been identified.

Ben Wallwork is currently being treated in Townsville University Hospital after he was seriously injured in the incident, which occurred just before 4am Friday.

The 34 year old was trapped in the wreckage and had to be extracted.

It is understood he suffered “very severe facial and brain injuries”.

Annie Johnson has started a GoFundMe campaign to help his parents, who have travelled from rural New South Wales to be by his bedside.

“He has a very long road ahead of him and will require a lot of support as he recovers from this,” she wrote.

Ms Johnson described Mr Wallwork, known has Benny, as “genuine, caring and ever so support(ive)”.

“Benny was injured in a single vehicle accident on the morning of Friday 5th May in Mackay,” Ms Johnson wrote on the appeal.

“He was flown to Townsville and is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit in the Townsville hospital as he has very severe facial and brain injuries.

“We are starting this GoFundMe page to raise some funds, to support Benny’s family in being able to be here in QLD (sic) to be by his side while he fights to recover; as well as to support Benny for his future medical needs.

“Any help that you are able to provide will be much appreciated.”

Mr Wallwork was initially taken to Mackay Base Hospital in a critical condition before he was flown to Townsville where he remains.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the vehicle had left the roadway and collided with a tree.

Forensic Crash Unit officers were called to the at the scene to investigate the single vehicle crash.
