Mackay’s Miner Lodge Hotel car fire investigated, woman hospitalised in Eimeo motorcycle crash

Police are scouring a Mackay cane field for firebugs after a car was torched on a cane train track. It comes after another car was set alight outside a nearby hotel.

Police are chasing two suspected arsonists through cane fields following a car fire on Saturday morning.

Emergency services responded to a stretch of cane locomotive tracks on the Glendaragh Rd near Glenella after receiving reports of two men setting a car on fire after 8am.

Bystanders said a white Ford hatch became stuck while driving near the tracks.

The incident stopped one cane locomotive and the track between Glenella and Farleigh is currently closed while the vehicle is towed.

Mackay-Whitsunday District Duty Officer Lisa Mansfield confirmed police were still in pursuit and an arson investigation was underway.

By the time police and firefighters arrived on scene the car was completely engulfed by flames.

Firefighters had the car extinguished by 8.48am while police pursued the two suspects through adjacent cane fields.

It comes after police and firefighters responded to reports of a car on fire on Lloyd St near the Miners Lodge Hotel just after 5am Friday.

It’s understood a hotel guest heard a car horn sounding at 5.02am before he looked out his window and saw the car fully involved.
He called the Queensland Fire Department and crews arrived to the scene after 5.10am.
The fire was extinguished by 6am and police are investigating.

It’s not known if the two car fires are linked.

It is believed the car had been abandoned in the street.

It’s been a busy 24 hours for Mackay crews who also attended an early motorbike crash at Eimeo.

The crash on Busuttin Drive happened about 12.03am Saturday.

A woman in her 30s sustained leg and hand injuries in the crash and was transported to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition.
