Mackay to host live big screen viewing of Olympics in Bluewater Quay

There’s nothing like watching Australia take on the world in front of a giant outdoor screen in a sea of green of gold. See where it’ll be.

A big screen is coming to Mackay for the Olympics so locals can come together and watch Australia take on the world in Paris 2024.

The Olympics and Paralympics Live ‘special celebration site’ will be held at Bluewater Quay on July 27, 28 and August 31 — September 1.

Funded by the Queensland government and Mackay council, the sites will also hold events backing local athletes and “inspire future Olympians” for a potential 2032 debut.

Separate sites will be set up across Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton, Longreach, Townsville and Cairns.

Mackay deputy mayor Belinda Hassan, rumoured to be a potential replacement for MP Julieanne Gilbert, said the region is excited to host it.

“Council is currently working with the community to activate the Bluewater Quay with food vendors, a big screen and seating on July 27 and 28,” she said.

“We have booked Saturday, August 31, after the Bluewater Fling, and Sunday, September 1, for the Paralympics LIVE screenings.

“We hope that the community really get behind this activation and use the opportunity to come down and enjoy the beautiful location beside our blue water river.”
But as great as a screen would be, Mackay has a unique opportunity to host athletes and matches for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.
The planned Stage 2 upgrades of Harrup Park’s Great Barrier Reef Arena would put the club and city in a great position to host cricket games, widely believed to be a shoe-in sport for Brisbane 2032.

Minister for State Development and Infrastructure Grace Grace said the sites will activate days after the ‘8-Years-To-Go’ milestone for the Brisbane 2032 Games.
