Discussions have resumed to shape the future of Mackay Airport’s Milton Precinct that would expand freight potential to and from the region.

Initial evaluations on the future use of land surrounding the precinct were put on hold last year because of COVID but have been revived as planning gets under way.

A Mackay Airport spokeswoman said the Milton Precinct was put on hold but talks had “resumed re-evaluating a range of opportunities”.

“Milton Precinct is part of the Mackay Airport’s overall vision to develop an airport that meet the needs of the region and its community,” the spokeswoman said.

“We want to utilise the airport’s land to enable our community to reach its fullest potential and are committed to working with the community, to achieve something we can all be proud of well into the future.”

Renewed signs of life in the expansion plans were revealed earlier this month when Mackay Regional Council approved a new $3.8m roundabout on Archibald St.

Bellwether Contractors was awarded the contract for the Milton Street upgrade which Mayor Greg Williamson said would ease existing congestion issues ahead of the airport’s expansion.

The initial discussions launched in August last year tabled the idea of a Global Export Centre with the mining, equipment, technology and services sector looked to grow their export footprint.

Mackay Airport‘s manager of commercial and terminals Adrian Miles at the time said a precinct at the airport would offer a speedier transit system and potential for freight innovation in the region.

“We’ve got a number of advantages as a regional export centre over capital city airports and we’re located where the produce comes from – you can harvest one day and have it on the plane on the same day,” Mr Miles said.
