A lucky driver was trapped in his car after a crash on the highway, but escaped before the car caught fire in the aftermath.

Police and paramedics were dispatched to a single vehicle crash on the corner of the Peak Downs Highway and Mount Flora Rd on Monday at 5.34pm.

Initial eyewitness reports to first responders claimed a man was trapped in his vehicle, but a Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said he escaped before it alighted.

The man, in his 30s, had suffered head and chest injuries before being taken to Mackay Base Hospital by rescue helicopter.

Paramedics were yet to arrive on scene, according to a Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman.

A Queensland police spokeswoman said the crash was 5km south of South Walker Creek, and the man has ‘unknown’ injuries.

Traffic was blocked to both lanes, with diversions being put in place.
More to come.
