Heartbroken dad farewells son drowned in septic tank

The Whitsunday music community has tightened around one of its own — grieving father Glenn Wiremu Taiapa whose three-year-old son tragically drowned in a septic tank in Far North Queensland.

Tiwanaku Pineamine Taiapa had been at a rural property at Koah when he fell into a septic tank on January 2.

The rescue helicopter was called but nothing could be done to save the little boy. Police are investigating the death, but no charges have been laid.

“He was on a rural property, and he’s gone out the back and fallen into a septic tank,” Mr Taiapa said.

“It should never have happened, I don’t know how it’s happened.

“I am just taking it day by day, it’s unreal.”

A member of the Whitsunday and Airlie Beach Festival of Music family, Paula Hovey, has begun a campaign to raise money to help Mr Taiapa and his daughter in this difficult time.

“Glenn is facing the hardest days as his beautiful son has tragically lost his life drowning at the age of three,” Ms Hovey wrote on the GoFundMe page.

A GoFundMe page has been started for Glenn Wiremu after the tragic death of his three-year-old son, who drowned in a septic tank at Koah, FNQ, on January 2, 2022.

“As you can imagine this is one of the saddest and most tragic times of any parent to go through.

“Money raised will go towards counselling, loss of income, accommodation while up north and rebuilding life for Glenn and his daughter

“The Whitsundays is known for helping each other in times of need.”

Ms Hovey wrote she hoped those in the region, as well as friends and family “far and wide can put their hands in their pockets”.

“Glenn is always at hand at festival time and other events to help out … so let‘s get together and give him a hand at this tragic time,” Ms Hovey wrote.

“This money is needed now to take the pressure off and take care of himself, his beautiful daughter and grieve his baby boy.

“RIP little man … we will do what we can to help your dad and sister.”

Tiwanaku‘s father, who is a well-known musician and artist in the Whitsundays, travelled to Cairns to make funeral arrangements, which involved performing the haka on the Cairns Esplanade as tribute to the little boy.
