RUGBY League Ipswich and the Queensland Rugby League have begun their investigation into Sunday’s off-field brawl at Purga.

RLI interim chairman Anthony Breeze said his board would assist the QRL in talking to the clubs, gaining evidence and assessing what happened near the can shop at Swifts home ground.

Videos of the incident, witness statements and observations from the referees are central to determining what course of action is needed.

“We work with the QRL now,'' Breeze said, unable to comment on allegations of what took place.

“It’s being investigated and appropriate punishment will be dished out after all evidence is brought in.’’

QRL Area Member Ipswich Jodie Teys also confirmed a detailed investigation was under way.

“We will gather information from all parties and make a decision from there,’’ she said.

The incident occurred in the latest match between Swifts and Goodna.

The RLI and QRL have both restated their no-tolerance policy on violence in the game, saying the punishment will be determined in coming days.

The Swifts Rugby League Club, which hosted the match, is one of the most professional in the competition, regularly holding fundraisers, memorial matches and Old Boys days.

It is believed some spectators ignited the brawl on the sideline.

Overnight posts on the RLI Facebook page have been removed to allow the investigation to proceed impartially.

Swifts are the RLI A-Grade competition leaders, having set high standards on the field this season.

The Bluebirds beat Goodna 58-6 in Sunday’s game as the second-placed Jets accounted for Brothers 42-28 at Raceview.

Norths kept in touch with the top four, beating Fassifern 44-6 on Saturday night.
