An Ipswich man has been charged with 14 sexual and violent offences allegedly committed against two women in the span of two weeks.
The man, in his 20s, stands charged with five counts of rape, two counts of attempting to commit rape, three counts of common assault, one of assault occasioning bodily harm, and three counts of disabling in order to commit an indictable offence.
He made an application for bail in Ipswich Magistrates Court on March 19.
The court heard he was accused of raping two different woman on separate occasions.
Magistrate Robert Walker said the allegations regarding the first woman involved him raping her after she told him she didn’t want to have sex.
It’s alleged the man raped and choked her until she fell unconscious.
Mr Walker said that woman alleged that when she regained consciousness, the man was raping her anally.
“She says she kept telling you to stop,” Mr Walker said.
He noted the allegations regarding the other woman were similar but “perhaps more serious”.
They involved 11 offences – including four counts of rape – allegedly committed across a number of days, starting from five days after the incident with the first woman.
“Her allegations also included choking, non-consensual intercourse, and other violence,” Mr Walker said.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Jo Colston said the man posed an “unacceptable risk to women in the community”.
She said there was a strong prima facie case against the man, which included a witness statement relating to the first incident.
Legal aid lawyer Thirushka Naidoo said the man would be contesting the allegations.
She said the man had no like criminal history, making the allegations “out of character”.
Ms Naidoo said strict bail conditions could effectively mitigate any risks the man posed.
Mr Walker noted the man would be liable to significant periods of imprisonment if found guilty.
He said he wasn’t convinced any conditions mitigated the risks of the man reoffending.
“Any risk that you might be capable of engaging in further such behaviour as that alleged is in my view simply too great,” he said.
He denied the man bail and remanded him in custody for next mention on April 5.
