OPINION: Fast growth brings big changes

AS an Ipswich born-and-bred resident I share a different experience of this place than the city's 190,000th resident.

I will be sure to hold dearly onto childhood memories of riding my bike to school past open fields with trees and horses, because the days of open fields in this city are coming to an end.

We've hit a growth spurt that will see our population increase to something like 435,000 in another 15-20 years.

This is scary when you consider that around the time I was born we were somewhere around the 75,000 mark.

On the flip side, there are things to look forward to.

The lack of night life we used to constantly complain about as 18-year-olds will slowly fade out - in fact this is already starting to happen, slowly.

The services we used to travel to Brisbane for without giving it a second thought will start setting up shop here - a factor that is already contributing to the population growth.

I loved the Ipswich I grew up in, but it is also great to hear the stories of people who once lived and worked in Brisbane now coming out here to start fresh.

With every new arrival, our city changes a little bit.

There is no disputing that Ipswich is getting a lot busier than it used to be, but I suppose it is the price of living in a great place.
