The region’s health service is calling for residents to help commemorate the history of the century-old nurses’ quarters at Gympie Hospital ahead of the building’s intended demolition.
The Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service, which oversees the hospital, has asked the public to share their photos and stories about the Alfred St building which has been a fixture for decades.
The building was earmarked for demolition following the construction of new staff quarters around the corner at Henry St.
An SCHHS spokeswoman said the building, which was not heritage listed, needed to be demolished as it could not be modified to meet modern standards.
“The building isn’t suitable for clinical spaces, and we explored the use for non-clinical teams,” the spokeswoman said.
“All of our health workers deserve the best possible work spaces and due to the age of the building, it can’t be modified to meet the needs of our teams.”
Asbestos inside the building played a role in its fate as well.
The exact date demolition work will start has not yet been confirmed.
The SCHHS did not want to move forward without commemorating the site’s history though.
“The Nurses’ Quarters at Gympie Hospital was home to so many nurses for so long and we’re sure there are a lot of fond memories,” she said.
“We would love to hear your memories to make sure we capture the history of the site.”
Memories of the site can be shared either online at the SCHHS’s Facebook page, or send to sc-communications@health.qld.gov.au
