Semi-retired and having just finished off a work-from-home contract with the health industry, Rae Gate is an experienced election candidate who has also served two full terms as a Gympie councillor and was once acting mayor.
“I’m a member of this community, I’m a resident of Division 4, and I believe I have the enthusiasm, the energy, the skills and the experience to work on Gympie Regional Council,” she said.
With decades of experience in the events management, electricity industry, customer service management, and serving as the secretary of the Gympie District Show Society, Ms Gate said she has the “wide ranging skills and service” for the job.
She said she was an active member of community organisations, serving in positions at Community Action Inc, the Gympie and District Women’s Health Centre and the community bank at Gympie’s Bendigo Bank.
As councillor she said she would focus on “financial responsibility because you’re dealing with the ratepayers’ money”.
“And I’m one of those ratepayers, I want to know what’s happening with my dollars as well.
“The three Rs, the rates, roads and rubbish, ensuring that the provision of those to our community are at minimal costs, because let’s face it, costs are soaring all the time now.
“And also stability for the region and support for jobs growth within all sectors across the region as well, too.”
She said tourism was a key part in jobs, economic growth and supporting business.
In four years she said she would like to see “a good strong council with stability across the region looking at community development to ensure that we have infrastructure planned for more and more people moving into this area.”
Ms Gate said she would like to have more family and youth friendly events.
“Some of the things you could do is have free DJ pool parties at the Aquatic Recreation Centre, you can organise incredible laser courses and have skirmish in Nelson Reserve,” she said.
“Musicians and music in the rotunda at Memorial Park would be fabulous.”
Born, raised and educated in Gympie she said he has a “very strong affiliation with the area”.
