‘Significant’ head injuries: Man critical after assault in Gympie

Police have declared a crime scene outside a Gympie hotel after a man was left fighting for life after an early morning assault.

A crime scene has been declared outside a licensed premises in Gympie after an assault in which a man was left fighting for life suffering significant head injuries.

A 41-year-old man was allegedly assaulted near the Queenslander Hotel in Mary St on Sunday about 2am.

Police were called to the scene as members of the public rendered first aid to the man who had sustained injuries consistent with grievous bodily harm.

Investigators were able to identify a suspect and later attended an address on Horseshoe Bend, where they arrested a 24-year-old man who is now assisting with inquiries.

The 41-year-old man was flown to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the assault, or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from Mary Street or Horseshoe Bend, to contact them.

Investigations are continuing.
