Luke Russell Harvey charged after alleged truck theft attempt, Bruce Hwy crash

A Jones Hill man has faced Gympie court over a series of incidents in the early hours of last Sunday morning at the Golden Nugget roadhouse south of Gympie then on the Bruce Highway at Kybong.

A 39-year-old Jones Hill man who allegedly tried to steal a truck from the Golden Nugget roadhouse south of Gympie, then crashed a car off the Bruce Highway at Kybong minutes later, will spend Christmas and the New Year in jail.

Luke Russell Harvey did not apply for bail when he faced Gympie Magistrates Court on Thursday, December 19, on multiple charges in relation to the early Sunday morning incident.

It is alleged Mr Harvey first tried to steal an Isuzu FFR 500 truck while the engine was running at the Ampol service station about 4.30am on Sunday, December 15.

He was allegedly confronted by the truck’s owner who pulled him out of the still-running vehicle, but then retreated to another vehicle.

Fifteen minutes later, about 4.45am, Mr Harvey allegedly crashed into a ditch after losing control on the Bruce Hwy while trying to overtake a truck.

Police will allege he tried to flee the scene of the accident on foot but was arrested shortly after.

The crashed vehicle was not stolen.

The 39-year-old was taken to Gympie Hospital with serious injuries and charged with two counts of driving a vehicle without a licence, and one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle, failing to remain at the scene of a crash, trying to escape while in custody, and wilful damage.
He is scheduled to reappear at the Gympie Magistrates Court on March 10, 2025.
