A 34-year-old Gympie man charged with attempted murder over a horrific hit and run in Gympie had his matter mentioned at Gympie Magistrates Courthouse on Monday, July 24, 2023.

Police have alleged Colin James Tupper attempted to run over Brett and Carla Benson on Sorensen Rd, at Southside, after an argument erupted between them around 10pm on Monday, May 22, 2023.

Carla Benson, 32, suffered serious head and chest injuries and was flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a critical condition.

Brett Benson, her husband, suffered leg injuries and was treated at Gympie Hospital.

Police reported Mr Tupper turned himself into the watch-house later that same evening. He has remained in custody, and made no application for bail or entered a plea.

Police prosecutor sergeant Melissa Campbell told the court on Monday the brief of evidence was still being checked and was an extensive process.

“Due to the nature of the charges, it is a very substantial brief of evidence,” she said.

Mr Tupper is charged with two counts of attempted murder, one count of wilful damage, one count of drink driving and one count of failing to remain at the scene and render assistance.

His matter was adjourned, and he will return to Gympie Magistrates Court on August 28, 2023.
