Cody Hazelgrove, Neil Lightfoot, Rade Trivanovic in court for alleged stabbing

Three men allegedly involved in a stabbing near Gympie’s Toucan Coffee Shop just off the Bruce Highway have had their trial dates changed.

Three men charged over the alleged Toucan Coffee stabbing just before Christmas had their matters mentioned in Gympie Magistrates Court on Monday, February 6.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the alleged stabbing occurred about 2am on November 20, on the corner of Monkland St and the Bruce Highway, near Toucan Coffee.

Rade Trivanovic, Cody Steven Hazelgrove and Neil Allan Lightfoot have been charged over the matter.

Mr Trivanovic, 39, from Curra, appeared before court on video on Monday and his matter was adjourned to seek legal aid.

Lawyer Chris Anderson appeared on behalf of Mr Hazelgrove and Mr Lightfoot, asking to adjourn their matters in accordance with the Mental Health Act.

Mr Trivanovic had appeared in court on January 31, 2023 to apply for bail after police claimed they found information on his phone that led to 31 new charges, including seven counts of weapon supply and 15 counts of drug supply.

This came after Mr Trivanovic was charged with two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and in company on November 20, 2022.

Police allegedly found drugs on Mr Trivanovic when he presented to the police on January 30, 2023.

During his mention on January 31, 2023, magistrate Chris Callaghan noted: “He said he had a hit two hours prior to attending the Gympie Police Station.”

Mr Trivanovic did not deny his drug use and said: “They’re using drugs in prison too, but at a much higher rate with 100 prisoners sharing one needle.”

He said he was “trying his best to stay out of trouble”.

The police allegedly found a syringe on him with blood still on the needle.

Representing himself, Mr Trivanovic told the court he hoped to help his mother prepare their house for sale. His mother was in the courtroom supporting him.

Mr Callaghan refused him bail due to his criminal record, admitted drug use and the 34 charges against him.

Mr Hazelgrove and Mr Lightfoot are named as co-accused in the alleged stabbing and are remanded in custody.

Mr Lightfoot was charged with two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and in company and obstructing police.

Mr Hazelgrove was charged with a total of 13 offences, including two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and in company, two counts of stealing after previous conviction, obstructing police and two counts of possessing drugs.

A plea was not entered for these charges.

Mr Trivanovic will appear in court again on March 6.

Mr Lightfoot and Mr Hazelgrove will appear again in court on August 14.
