In March 2025, the business and general community of the CBD held a public meeting to decry the increasing level of crime and vagrancy overtaking the centre of Gympie.

Police have ramped up their presence in CBD after businessman and former Chamber of Commerce president Tony Goodman said the emotion and frustration of business owners was “overwhelming”.

“When I went door-to-door for three days before organising this meeting … every trader I spoke with had a shocking story to share,” Mr Goodman said.

Mr Goodman has run a business in Mary St for 11 years, and said he had “never witnessed an issue as deeply concerning and emotive as the homelessness crisis and the growing drug problem in our CBD”.

“Business owners are struggling to keep their doors open as aggressive behaviour drives away customers,” he said.

Unsurprisingly, Mary St and its immediately adjacent streets represent a statistical cluster of more than 150 reported offences, making it the scene of most crimes in Gympie the past six months.

Mary Street’s most common offences were assault and traffic related, and Nash Street’s were traffic and drug related.

Interestingly, a significant cluster of 46 crimes were committed in the area near Gympie Marketplace and Memorial Park, with the most common being thefts, followed by good order offences, property damage, assaults, weapons and drugs.

An “other homicide” was committed at the corner of Mary St and Monkland St just before Christmas 2024, and there have been 22 recorded assaults in the CBD in the past six months.

The most dangerous residential street, however, was Lawrence St, which stretches out of the CBD, and includes a notorious block of flats where there was a stabbing in June 2024.

Across the city, the most common crime has been “other thefts” (367 offences), followed by traffic related offences (234) and drug offences (212).

Assaults are the sixth most common crimes in the 4570 postcode, with 117 assaults recorded, 116 break-ins, and 79 car thefts.

There were 37 weapons act offences recorded, 26 fraud, six arson offences, five robberies and one “other” homicide.

Another significant cluster exists near the Gympie Central Shopping Centre, around Perseverance St, Excelsior Road and Hall Lane, where 128 crimes were committed in the past six months, including 40 unlawful entries near the Old Bruce Highway, eight assaults and 11 counts of fraud.

On the Southside, a cluster of drug offences were recorded near Bushland Drive and College Road.
