Gympie’s long awaited $1 billion Bruce Hwy bypass continues to advance, with a new interchange at Curra open to local traffic and vehicles temporarily allowed on part of the new stretch of road.
Traffic at the northern tip of the Bypass - about 18km north of Gympie - has been moved onto a 1.4km stretch west of the highway so workers can connect the bypass to the old highway, a statement from the Qld Transport Department said.

The new interchange at the northern end of the bypass was partially opened to local traffic at the same time.
Drivers heading around Curra can use the interchange bridge, its roundabouts, and a realigned section of Ashfords Rd.

The interchange will join the old and new Bruce Hwy sections once the bypass officially opens in 2024.
It is the second piece of new road to be opened to the traffic, with parts of the Flood Rd interchange at its southern end opened to traffic in March.
Two overpass bridges across the new stretch of highway were opened in late 2022.
The bypass is expected to transform the Gympie region.
