Miva property torn to shreds after freak storm

A Miva mother has recounted the terrifying moment she was separated from her children during a terrifying storm that gripped the Gympie region this week.

Ashleigh Jensen was on her way home from work when the dangerous stormcell rolled in on Tuesday night.

She couldn’t go any further and her children were trapped in the house.

The Jensens were too busy cleaning up to speak with the Gympie Times but pictures and information provided to the Higgins Storm Chasing facebook page has been shared with permission.

She told HSC she received a phone call from her terrified children as the storm struck their rural property.

The family caravan had flipped into the side of the house.

Both parents tried to get to the house as quickly as possible but several fallen trees blocked their path.

When they finally got through they were greeted with a trail of destruction.

Ms Higgins told Higgins Storm Chasing a bird aviary was overturned, her horse stable destroyed, several century-old trees uprooted, and cattle was found tangled in barbed wire.

The family caravan was found overturned next to their house.

During the peak of the storm, Ms Jensen’s eldest daughter, aged 14, gathered her younger siblings and hid under a table with their two dogs.

The mother stayed on the phone to the children while the storm continued for the next five minutes, ripping the Miva property apart.

Once the worst was over, the family scoped out the damage impact their beloved home and worked well into the night to free their cattle and check on their remaining animals.

Thankfully, none were seriously injured.

Higgins Storm Chasing said on Tuesday power was cut off to two of the family’s main structures on their property, but the home itself managed to retain electricity.

A clean-up commenced at the Miva property on Wednesday and was continuing on Thursday.

The family were among several victims impacted by the wild weather this week, with the aftermath of the storm felt by farmers and residents across Miva.

The weather bureau is investigating whether the supercell produced a tornado.
