A Cooloola Cove man is on trial this week on five charges relating to the alleged assault of two women in December 2018.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded not guilty to two counts of common assault occasioning bodily harm, two counts of choking and one count of common assault.

Crown Prosecutor Stephanie Gallagher told the court the alleged offences occurred on two separate occasions in December 2019.

She said the first occurred in the early hours of the morning after the man and his partner had gone to the country club to watch a sporting match and returned home quite drunk before having an argument.

“It was an argument that got physical,” she said.

She said the man had allegedly struck the victim in the face and had grabbed her leg, dragging her through the hallway before placing his hands around her neck and choking her in a way where she couldn’t breathe.

Ms Gallagher said it was at this point the victim’s teenage daughter became a witness to the assault, after coming out of her room to see what all the noise was about.

“She’ll tell you she saw the defendant standing over her mum, hitting her, squeezing her neck.”

Ms Gallagher said the daughter then got involved to try to separate the man from her mother, but was allegedly attacked by the man, who threw her over his shoulder.

“She landed on the ground, almost on top of her mum,” the court heard.

On another occasion less than two weeks later, the court heard the defendant was packing a bag and took a set of keys to the house with him.

Ms Gallagher said the victim was concerned the defendant was going to leave her, and take their infant son with him.

While the man was showering, the victim took the keys, which led to another altercation where she was allegedly choked by the defendant.

Ms Gallagher told the court the victim sustained multiple injuries from the two incidents, including a split lip and bruising to her neck.

The trial will continue in Gympie District Court on Tuesday, May 11.
