Gympie will reach freezing temperatures and the region could experience some heavy frosts over the next few days as a southern cold snap moves up into Queensland.

Weather Bureau meteorologist Pieter Claassen said on Wednesday the temperature would dip to 2C on Thursday morning, dropping a whole 12C in 24 hours.

“That’s about 6C cooler than June averages in Gympie,” he said.

He said Gympie may even beat last year’s coldest day in June with 1.8C, but it was unlikely temperatures would drop lower than the coldest day for Gympie in July last year, which was 1.1C.

Mr Claassen also said the cold snap was due to a low pressure system with winds from New South Wales pushing cold air into Queensland, which was moving south-west across the state.

“This ridge is really bringing up some of those colder conditions as it pushes across Queensland,” he said.

New South Wales was also experiencing a colder winter than usual, with predictions of snow over the next few days.

Mr Claassen said Gympie would not be fortunate enough to witness snow, however there would be an abundance of frost.

His advice to residents was to rug up and get an extra blanket for the next couple of nights, as overnight temperatures will reach near 0C.
