When The Gympie Times asked readers to nominated who they thought were the best soccer players in the region on June 1, we were met with an avalanche of nominations.

After much enthusiasm from the voting public, we are pleased to announce Gympie United Football Club Under 12 player Ryder Johnston is the Gympie Region’s Best Football Player 2021, winning nine per cent of all votes cast.

Cody Greaves placed a close second, with six per cent of the vote, and third place was a three-way tie between Sophie Nolan, Justin O’Connell and Jordan Senini, all winning three per cent of the vote.

Congratulations to them all.

Ryder, 11, was nominated by his stepmother, Zoe Morrison, who said he has been playing soccer since he was five.

“His favourite position on the field is midfield,” she said.

She said Ryder had a lot of skill despite his young age, scoring goals as many times as he can.

“He’s definitely a team player, he’s the type of kid that will make sure if someone hasn’t scored before that they’ll score as well.”

Ms Morrison said Ryder had always played up a division, against players older than he is.

He currently plays for Gympie United Football Club Tigers in the Under 12s.

He is also house captain at One Mile State School in Gympie.

Congratulations Ryder on winning this fun poll.
