Australia’s electricity industry apprenticeships opened on Friday, June 28, offering game-changing opportunities for a record 185 new starters to join the electricity distribution companies.
Energex and Ergon Energy Network are recruiting for 61 locations in 2024; from the Gold Coast to the Gulf, and west across Outback Queensland. Apprenticeships are being offered across five trade disciplines: Distribution Linesperson, Electrotechnology Electrician, Communication Technician, Transmission Linesperson, and Mechanical Fitter.
In South East Queensland, Energex is seeking apprentices at 17 depots and sites: Beaudesert, Berrinba, Burleigh Heads, Caboolture, Cleveland, Cooroy, Gatton, Geebung, Greenslopes, Gympie, Landsborough, Maroochydore, Oxley, Raceview, Southport, Stafford, Stapylton.

Ergon Energy Network is recruiting for 44 depots across regional Queensland: Atherton, Biloela, Blackall, Bundaberg, Cairns, Charleville, Charters Towers, Childers, Chinchilla, Clermont, Cooktown, Cunnamulla, Dalby, Emerald, Georgetown, Gladstone, Hervey Bay, Home Hill, Hughenden, Ingham, Innisfail, Kingaroy, Mackay, Mareeba, Maryborough, Millmerran, Miriam Vale, Monto, Moranbah, Mossman, Mount Isa, Murgon, Normanton, Rockhampton, Roma, Sarina, Springsure, Stanthorpe, Toowoomba, Townsville, Tully, Warwick, Whitsunday, Yeppoon.

A statement released by the industry on Friday said the roles were highly competitive but the baseline criteria included that candidates:
Be aged at least 17 at the time of the apprenticeship starting (ie, by February 14, 2025). There’s no upper age limit.
Be a permanent resident, or hold a visa that enables them to work and remain in Australia permanently.
Applicants who are currently in their final year of school will need to complete Year 12
In addition to world-class training, competitive salaries, and supplying all tools, uniforms, course fees and textbooks, there are additional generous allowances for those considering a career outside major cities. Depending on where apprentices are based, those in rural, regional and remote Queensland may be eligible for:
Up to $25k/yr zone allowance (for designated locations outside major cities)
Up to $7k/yr locality allowances
Up to $24k/yr housing support, where approved
Up to five additional leave days per annum to enable travel to and from holiday destinations (for specific locations).
The Class of 2025 will join nearly 560 apprentices currently at various stages of their trade apprenticeships at Energex and Ergon Energy.
